This expression became a popular greeting after the cartoon Baby and Carlson release, in which sweet-toothed Carlson called his birthday a jam day. This greeting type is most often addressed to children and sometimes to adults, but very close ones. There are also other informal greetings for friends and relatives.

Birthday toasts

In addition to the greeting itself, which you say to the birthday boy when you give him a present or immediately upon meeting him, it is customary in Russia to say a toast in which you can put all your wishes. It is not uncommon for a toast to be a story or an anecdote that will be the backstory to the wishes.

A short toast could be this:

  • За здоровье! — To your health! Cheers!
  • За именинника/цу! — To a birthday boy/girl!
  •  За виновника / виновницу торжества! — To the hero of the occasion!

The longer one is like this:

  •  Предлагаю выпить за здоровье именинника/цы! — Let’s make a toast to a birthday boy’s/girl’s health!
  • Давайте выпьем за то, чтобы у именинника/цы все было хорошо! — Let’s make a toast  and wish the birthday boy/girl all the best!
