Lesson 33. The genitive case of nouns in the meaning of "origin"

We continue to study the nouns cases in the Russian language. This lesson is about the genitive case (short for P. C.) of words that indicate your origin. Additionally, you will continue to study the topic Откуда ты?. Where are you from?

– Hi, my name is Masha. I am из России.

– Hi, Masha. Nice to meet you. And we are John and Henry.

– John, ты откуда– Я из Швейцарии.

– Генри, а ты откуда?

– Я из Великобритании.

Endings in the genitive will change according to the following rules:

– in the masculine after a consonant → consonant + ending -a – Вашингтон (E. P.) → из Вашингтона (R. P., “откуда” “from where?”);

– in m. g. -й, -ь → -ya – Китай → из Китая;

– in feminine -a → -ы – Москва → из Москвы;

– in feminine -ии → -ia – Франция → из Франции, Россия → из России;

– in feminine -га/-ка/-ха → -ги/-ки/-хи – Камчатка → с Камчатки..
