In one of the previous video lessons, you learned how to use the construction “есть”. Today you will learn how to say that you have not something (to have not). You will also review the personal pronouns genitive case topic.
Note the word order in this sentence: preposition “у” + personal pronoun in genitive case (у кого) + “нет” + a noun in genitive case (чего нет?)..
Unlike the affirmative sentence, in the negative one both the object (нет кого) and the subject (у кого) are in the genitive case.
У тебя (genitive case) есть друг (nominative case)? — Нет, у меня (genitive case) нет друга (genitive case).
У него есть жена? — Нет, у него (genitive case) нет жены (genitive case).
У нас есть время? — Нет, у нас (genitive case) нет времени (genitive case).
У них есть компьютер? — Нет, у них (genitive case) нет компьютера (genitive case).
. Personal pronouns in the genitive case: я → у меня, ты → у тебя, он → у него, она → у нее, вы → у вас, мы → у нас, они → у них.
