How to combine work and learning Russian: 5 useful tips

combine work and learning Russian

One of the biggest problems for the modern person is finding the time to do all the things one wants and needs to do. Optimise your schedule, make a clear timetable and use Russian every minute while at work.

Use the breaks for Russian

This is the most obvious option, but it also needs to be approached wisely. The trick is to make learning fun so that you don’t feel like you are giving up the break.

Use the suggested options at least one; if you can implement them all, that would be great. Listen to podcasts. You don’t need to spend your whole lunch break doing this, but setting aside 5-10 minutes while your lunch is warming up or you walk/drive to the canteen is easy to do. This option is suitable if your level is Intermediate or above.

  1. Watch Russian-language TV shows. In the same way as in the previous case, allocate up to 10 minutes. You can watch a long show part as well as small humorous ones.
  2. Use apps to learn Russian. Many apps allow you to set a goal for the day (you can choose the same 10 minutes), which allows you to practice during the break. You can do tests, audio exercises and learn new words.

The main thing is that when you work during your break, don’t spend all your time on it, give yourself a chance to rest and switch gears.

If you use the computer frequently at work, translate its interface into Russian. Let Russian words surround you as much as possible: programmes, commands within programmes, electronic assistants’ names, etc. If you regularly need a mobile phone or tablet for work, also switch their interface to Russian.

It might be a bit difficult at first because computer vocabulary is still specific, but you will gradually get used to it. This way you will build up your vocabulary, and with active vocabulary.

Learn while enjoying the music

Of course, working hours are not about resting and doing something extra other than your main duties. However, there is nothing wrong with listening to songs in Russian while performing some routine tasks that do not require you to concentrate too much. You can break these songs down at home beforehand and listen with comprehension at work, memorizing more and more words and phrases.
