Russian gerunds

Russian gerunds

There is no such thing as gerund in Russian, but infinitives, verbal nouns, participles and adverbs can sometimes serve as gerunds. But for those who speak English fluently, it is easier to understand these categories with the help of the gerund, which expresses an action in process or a condition.

Characteristics of the gerund in the Russian language

Most often, the gerund in the Russian language has two types of attributes: adverbial and verbal.

  1. Just like an adverb, the gerund does not change by number, case or gender.
  2. Just like the verb, the gerund:

.

  • changes by tense and aspect — приготовив обед / having cooked lunch (perfective) и готовя обед / (while) cooking lunch (imperfective);
  • can have both direct and indirect coplement — управляя автомобилем / driving a car;
  • can have an adverbial modifier that answers the questions “how?”, “when?” and others — аккуратно управляя автомобилем / driving a car safe.

.

The gerund can be formed both from transitive verbs (combined without a preposition with a noun in the accusative or genitive case) and from intransitive verbs.

  • готовить обед — готовя обед (transitive);
  • заходить в дом — зайдя в дом (intransitive).

Forming gerund in Russian

The peculiarities of the formation of the Russian gerund, which is expressed by the adverbial participle, depend on the tense and the aspect. All the rules can be divided into two large categories of gerund: imperfect (in the present or future tense) and perfect (in the past tense).

.

The overall picture looks like this:

Imperfective

Perfective

Suffix -я, -а

Suffix -в, -вши, -я(ши)

However, there are some particularities and exceptions. Let’s take a more detailed look.

How is the gerund formed on the present tense

It is formed from an imperfect verb and denotes an action that is simultaneous with the action of the main verb.

  1.   The gerund in the present tense is formed from the third person plural in the present tense by dropping the ending -ут, -ют or -ат, -ят and adding -я or -a to the base. The ending -a is added to the bases ending in -ж, -ч, -ш, -щ.

  • verbs with the suffix -нуть: дунуть / to blow (semelfactive), кивнуть / to nod (semelfactive);
  • and several others: бежать / to run, лить / to shed, петь / to sing, пить / to drink, шить / to sew, писать / to write.
